The plants and animals of two other desert life-zones come together in St. George and this makes for a very diverse desert biology. St. George is also the site of some of America's most scenic geologic wonders. Anciently the St. George area was the bottom of a giant lake and various layers of sediment that were deposited in this lake have now been exposed. These layers of red and white colored sedimentary rock (sandstone) make for dramatic scenic back-drops. Volcanic activity also has covered the region and lava cones and fields of ancient molten lava cover the hills and valleys of the area. The contrast of red sandstone, black lava, blue skies and green desert foliage is a scenic marvel. Click here for a list of things to do in St. George, Utah.
